Evidence at Last! When you're raised on the Bible as a child, it is far more difficult to get rid of its faulty programming when you're an adult. This book is great for anyone who wants to help along the process of deprogramming one's subconscious. When you finally are able to see the Bible for what it is - a manmade, often politically motivated document, that means you've finally developed a means to think for yourself. As Erhman so masterfully discloses, Scribes changed parts of the Bible, altered it, it is a human book prone to human error. For anyone to believe that God dictated word for word what was to go into the Bible, and that it got taken down with accuracy is pure lunacy. ^M
The title is misleading, this a historical study of the documentation of the New Testament and not conspiracy theories The ill-chosen title of Bart Ehrman's most recent work, Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why, implies that there was a giant, vast conspiracy involved in changing the Bible to hide mysterious truths. The title is an attempt by the editor to cash-in on the current Da Vinci Code mania for all things conspiratorial regarding religion. Don't let that confuse you though. A more accurate title would be: The Bible through the Ages: A historical and scientific analysis of the documentation of the New Testament. ^M
Fails To Convince Bart Ehrman is a highly-regarded New Testament scholar and chairs the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has both an M.Div. and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary where he studied under Bruce Metzger. Much of Ehrman's career has been dedicated to proving a rather unorthodox thesis: that history has been incorrect in suggesting that it was heretics such as Marcion who were responsible for tampering with the texts of the Bible. Rather, he suggests and attempts to prove, it was those who professed faith in Christ who sought to change the Scripture to force it to adapt to their beliefs. In the past decade he was written extensively, though the bulk of his work has been directed at the academy, as shown by such intimidating titles as The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture: The Effect of Early Christological Controversies on the Text of the New Testament. It is somewhat surprising, then, to see that at this very moment his name adorns the covers of no less than three books on the New York Times bestseller's list.^M
