Of course Spong's arguments will not persuade fundamentalists because he uses rational arguments based on close analysis of biblical texts. The true fundamentalist is immune to reason and evidence, and often knows only a few proof texts in the bible. And they account for a very large percentage of Christians who are faithfully gullible to biblical distortions and literalism---especially when literalism ignores bibilical contexts.
