Powerful

If you are a person either wondering how to best use your leadership ability for the Lord or how to encourage others to do so then this is a great resource.

Worthwhile Reading for the Discerning Christian Leader

All writers create works that come from their perspective to various degrees depending upon a variety of factors including their specific agenda, extent of personal knowledge on the subject, degree of insights into other author's insights, and the level of their personality or ego. On one extreme is an author writing about a subject with which they are unfamiliar and have to rely upon other sources. On the other one is writing about a subject in which they are infinitely familiar. Bill Hybels' treatise was of the latter case and represented his insights and strong work ethic from thirty years of church leadership. These experiences were the main strength of the book and offered valuable insights for pastors involved with similar seeker sensitive churches. Hybels only used three or four outside references and most of those were from the business world. The main negative of the book was closely related to its strength. With his successful career as a pastor and visionary, he warned leaders to be cautious about pride (p. 190) but seemed to have fallen victim to it himself. This was revealed in many ways, including the very first statement in the book that stated, "Ten days after the attacks on the World Trade Center Towers, I stood in the rubble at ground zero . . .(p. 13). Remarks such as this, even though they were true, should have been edited from the book in a spirit of humility. On the other hand, perhaps one of the most positive points of the whole book was Pastor Hybels' unabashed honesty in this regard.^M

Thoughtful
